Cruise out of Shanghai

I am leaving from New York via change of planes in Hong Kong onward to Shanghai. Can I take advantage of the 72 hour transit. Leaving Shanghai on the same day I arrive.

If you will go to a third country or region rather than HK after transiting in Shanghai, you can take advantage of the 144 hour visa-free transit facility.
