About:China Visa Application Procedure and Fee

i'll stay in Guangzhou airport en route to Germany for 6 hrs & Xiamen for 4 hrs on return to Sydney

do I need a visa or am I restricted to the transit section of airport (both airports have limited information available)

Hi, you are eligible for 24 hour direct transit in China, no visa is needed then.
