About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

72 hour visa: arriving Shanghai by plane but exiting by ship on a cruise liner

My wife and I are arriving in Shanghai via Emirates airlines at 10pm on Aug 31, to be collected by Holiday Taxi (private hire) and taken to Radisson Blu hotel to stay for one night only. Then, Holiday Taxi will collect us from Radisson Blu Hotel at 1pm, Sept 1 to be taken to Shanghai Wusoungkuo International cruise terminal to join the Royal Caribbean cruise liner (Mariner of the Seas) which is leaving Shanghai at 4.30pm for Okinawa, Japan. We are basically staying in Shanghai for about 13 to 14 hours. Are we eligible for the 72 hour free transit? My name is Rod.

Rod, you are eligible for the free transit in Shanghai. No visa is needed for that.

Thank you Daniel for your advice. However, I am still confused after reading so many commentaries. It seems that I am not eligible because the 72 hour visa-free Transit (as well as the 24 hour Transit visa) are only applicable to passengers who have confirmed flights arriving and exiting China by air only. I am going out of a China by cruise liner. I wonder if I should telephone Shanghai Immigration for a credible action that I should follow. But thanks all the same for trying to help.

Shanghai Immigration's web site clearly stated that the 144-hour visa free transit applies to persons arriving/departing by cruise ships. Or you can try calling but you'll get the same answer.
