Hi, you cannot enjoy 144 hour free transit. You need to apply for a visa for that.

Hello,

thanks for your reply.
As concerning the 144hours free transit rule, is there an official source where to read all the conditions related to this rule? I mean Chinese foreign office or something similar?
In fact, reading a lot of sites concerning the 144 hours free transit rule, I never had read that if I have an airport transit in China I must have a valid visa for China.
You can let me know an official site where is written this?

Thanks and best regards,
Gigi

Gigi, the reason why you cannot use the 144 hour free transit facility is because you will also transit in Xian, but the 144 hour free transit policy requires that you should go to Shanghai directly. You can contact Shanghai general station of immigration inspection to confirm that. Tel: 0086-21-31366100

I don't know what sites you've visited, but even Wikipedia has crystal-clear instructions on their Visa policy of China page: "In order to qualify for the 72 or 144-hour TWOV, the traveler's inbound and outbound flights must directly arrive at and depart from one of the acceptable ports of entry from or to a third country (including one of the two SARs). Both flights must have no stopovers of any kind within Mainland China prior to arrival or after departure at the port of entry, and the outbound flight's first stop or destination must be in a different country than the inbound flight's."
