US Citizen Visiting Shanghai from Japan

Hi there!
I'm looking into visiting Shanghai for 2 days this summer in the middle of a trip to Tokyo. So, I'd be flying NYC to Tokyo round trip and then, within a 3 week stay in Japan, purchasing a round-trip ticket to Shanghai. Would I need a Visa? Can I take advantage of the 72 hour free transit?
Thanks!

Brian, if you travel like Japan-Shanghai-Japan, then you won’t qualify for the 72 hour visa-free transit in Shanghai. You need to apply for a visa in advance.
