I am going to Seoul through Shanghai from jfk and return the same way.

I want to stay a few days in Shanghai on both legs of the journey. Is the 144 hours visa exempt applicable on both legs?

Ben, if you travel like JFK-Shanghai (144 hours)-Seoul-Shanghai (144 hours)-JFK, you are able to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai on both legs of the journey. Nice trip!
