Can I book a ticket from Sydney to Shanghai that stops over at KL for 1 day (clear customs at all)

and then fly back to Sydney from Shanghai?? Is the stop over considered as coming from another country ?

Probably not. However, if you only show the portion of your flight from KL, it would show KL to China to Sydney.

Seth, please stop confusing people with incorrect answers. Truth is Chinese immigration only cares about your FIRST DESTINATION OUTSIDE CHINA, not your final destination. In this case SYD-KUL-PVG-SYD is considered as transit.
