About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am Australian living in Japan, do I need Tourist L type for Tianjin for 2x nights?

Hi I have tried flying from Sapporo (Japan) to Tianjin last year, however I was denied entry on to my plane by Tianjin Airline staff because I didn't have a Visa. I was only going to be in Tianjin for 48hrs.
Why was I denied flight to Tianjin? I want to make sure that the next time I travel I have the supporting documents to let me fly/stay in Tainjin and return to Sapporo (Japan).
I am Australian living in Japan, if I need the visa for Tianjin how would I apply?
Your assistance would be appreciated. Ben

You were correctly denied boarding because you were not in transit at Tianjin. You will need a visa if your route is Japan-China-Japan. You can have 72 hours free transit if your route is, for example, Sapporo-Tianjin-Seoul-Sapporo because then you would be in transit to a third country from China.

Hi Leo, thanks for explaining. That makes sense now - A stopover doesn't count as transit.
Do you know how I can apply for the Visa? I can't find any information for Australians residing in Japan for Tianjin. Thanks again for a fast response.

Maybe try checking the website of the Chinese embassy/consulate in your region?
