About:China Transit Visa

US Citizen with 27 hour layover in China

I am flying from DEL to PVG. 11 hour layover at Shanghai. PVG to TAO, 1.5 hour flight. 14.5 hour layover at Qingdao. TAO to SFO.
Total time in China - 27 hours.
I am an American citizen. As my total stay in China is 27 hours which is greater than 24 hours, will I need to apply for the visa prior? Or is it possible that I can stay at the airport instead and not require visa? I am flying China Eastern.
