About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does the 72hr Rule Apply for TPE-CAN/SZX and then CAN/SZX to Macau?

US Citizen
Can I enjoy the benefit if:
Day 1: TPE to CAN or SZX on 1 airline
Spend the night.
Day 2: CAN or SZX to MFM on a different airline?

Can I take the train from Guangzhou to Macau instead on Day 2?

TPE-CAN-MFM is possible if travelling on nonstop flights. Different airlines are permitted, but you must enter and exit China by air. TPE-SZX-MFM is not possible, as anyone transiting through SZX requires a valid visa.
On second thought, there are no nonstop flights from CAN to MFM. Only option is to fly to HKG and take the ferry.
