my wife, my 4 yr old and myself are traveling from LAX to Oki with a 19 hour lay over in Shanghai

HI, we are american citizens and my wife, my 4 yr old and myself are traveling from LAX to Okinawa with a 19 hour lay over in Shanghai (PDX). Are we eligible for the 72 hour pass. We have a hotel room booked 6 miles away from the airport. Were planning on leaving Shanghai airport, spending the night in a hotel... walking around the hotel area then leaving 19 hours after we first landed to our final destination of Okinawa. I do not believe we need a visa for visiting japan, but we dont want to be stuck in the airport once we arrive.
