Yes, as long as your flight from Shanghai to India has no other stops in mainland China.

My flight from Canada to Shanghai is nonstop, but my flight from Shanghai to Calcutta has me change planes in Kumming. Can I still use the 144 transit pass to get stop in Shanghai?

Well... in that case, you are no longer eligible. Getting a ten-year visa is cheaper than changing your flight ($160 vs penalties+fare difference).
