About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US citizen traveling through shanghai, Beijing in route to US.

I am a US citizen currently in Japan. I am flying back to US with connecting flights in shanghai (70 hours in city) then connecting in Beijing (48 hours) before heading to the US. Will I be ok without a visa?

No. You need a visa. Or else you need to insert a side-trip to (for example) Hong Kong. Japan-SHA-HKG-PEK-USA would work without a visa.
