About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying SFO-PEK then BKK as a Standby passenger

Am flying United SFO-PEK then to BKK. I will be flying as a standby passenger, my seat assignment will not be assigned until at the gate or check in with flight. Can I use the 72 hrs with out a seat assignment and a standby ticket?
