Flying from US to Beijing the. To Canada

Can a US citizen fly from the US to Beijing, stay 72 hours and then take a return flight to Canada using a Transit visa.

Sure you can use a transit visa but the 72h TWOV is easier and cheaper to get as a transit visa.
