About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Flying to Shanghai from DXB on China Eastern Airlines and transiting to Air China flight to Tokyo

We have entry visas for China that allow one entry only. I have a Dutch passport and my wife has a Colombian one. When we first arrive at Shanghai airport, we will take another flight out to Tokyo the same evening.

Five days later, we will return to Shanghai from Tokyo to enter China and stay 5 days on our one-entry visas. So, when we arrive in transit in Shanghai, can we get our bags from the China Eastern Airlines flight, check them in with Air China to Tokyo (5 hours later) WITHOUT passing immigration?

If we must pass immigration while in transit to pick up and check in the bags in the other airline, we will lose the right to enter Shanghai when we return from Tokyo. Please advise.
Thank you.

Alex, both of you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai when you enter for the first time. You should contact with the airlines to inquire if you need to collect the luggage, or it will be delivered to the final destination directly. If you need to collect it, you just need to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the airport and then you can pass immigration and check in again.
