About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong to Shanghai to Japan US citizens

We are flying to Hong Kong From Los Angeles, then flying to Shanghai from Hong Kong for 3 nights, then flying to Tokyo Japan. Are we eligible to use the 72 hours visa free transit?
