Flight tickets for a Tourist visa(L)

Hello,
Im Italian and at the moment I'm living in Australia. i would like to go to china to meet my girlfriend who is working there. is it possible to apply for a tourist L type without a flight to come back to Australia? i'd stay less than 1 month but i don't wanna book a flight to comeback until I'm already in China. Thanks
