About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

72 visa if need to change planes in China

We fly Osaka to Xian BUT change plane in Quingdao ( don't leave airport )
Stay in Xian 48hrs then fly straight to Syd

Can we use 72 hrs free transit system ?

I think you are eligible for the 72-hour free transit policy in Xian, but you had better confirm this with the airline and Xian airport.

The answer from Daisy is wrong. You cannot use 72 hours free transit. Because you have two stops in China (Qingdao and Xian) you are limited to 24 hours in China. If you want to stay longer in Xian you must get a visa in advance, or change your itinerary.
