About:Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

I have around 8 hours stopover at Guangzhou Airport

we are coming from Los Angeles on Southern China air, stop for 8 hours before continuing to Australia on same airline/plane.

Do we have time to leave the airport to eat and shop? I hear the train to the city takes a very long time but my travel agent says that since we don't have to transfer luggage or re-check in it should be ok...

Since your transfer procedure can be simple, your time can be enough for shopping and dining in town. A single journey by subway takes only 50min (Line 3 to Jiahewanggang - Line 2 to Haizhu Square - Line 6 to Beijing Road). The Beijing Road Pedestrian Street is a fine place for your purpose. The way back can be the same, or you may walk to Haizhu Square to take airport shuttle bus line 5 to CAN, which takes almost the same as subway.
