Is a visa needed for a layover in Shanghai

My daughter and I are American and are traveling to Seoul, South Korea with a 4 hour layover in Shanghai. Our return flight home also has a 2 hour layover in Shanghai. A friend mentioned that we may need an entry permit. We are not planning to leave the airport. Can you please tell me if we will need one?

I don't think you need it as you qualify for the direct transit policy.
