I called Shanghai General Station of Immigration Inspection on 0086-21-51105100 this morning. I was advised that I am eligible for 144 hour visa free on each trip - from Sydney to Japan and also from Japan to Sydney. Only the question the officer asked was my passport. My passport is issued by the country listed in the Qualified Countries list.
