Temoporary Residence Permit with X2 visa

Hi,
I am going to study in China from March to June and I will probably need an X2 type. Is it possible that the university also needs a Trmporary Residence Permit even if I am living in the campus' hotel and for less than 6 months? Would it be illegal not to have it?
