About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I plan to arrive from Los Angeles to Beijing by china eastern via shanghai. I hold a US passport

Next morning my china eastern dhaka bangladesh flight leaves from Beijing to dhaka via kunming(same flight number).
I understand that I will have to get 24 hr direct transit visa on 1st port of entry at Shanghai for the overnight stay in Beijing. could I request the immigration to issue me the 72 hour free transit for visiting Beijing.

The 72 hour free transit cannot cover your trip if you travel like that, but if your total time in both Beijing and Shanghai is less than 24 hours, you will be eligible for the 24 hour direct transit and then no visa will be needed either. You can apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport, and then you can visit the city.
