About:China Tourist Visa

I am currently living and studying in the UK, but I hold only an American passport.

I'm curious to know if I should use an agency to obtain my visa or if I would be fine using the Chinese embassy directly in London. Furthermore, I am visiting an Irish citizen currently studying in Beijing -- how should be provide me with a letter of invitation and is it even necessary on the tourist L type

Cassady, you can apply for it from the CVASC in London directly. No need to find an agency to help you with that.
If you can provide round trip air tickets, and hotel reservation, the invitation letter is not necessary anymore.
