Police Registration for AirBnB

Hello, we (US citizens) are travelling from Tokyo to Shanghai PVG and plan to stay 5 days. We are staying not at a hotel, but at an AirBnB apartment. Can we register at the police without the owner of the property present? Are there different rules for AirBnB?
