About:China Visa

My husband and I, Costaricans living in Sydney, Australia, will go to Japan through China.

Hi!
We have two questions:
1. Do we need transit visa if we´ll stay just 4 hours at the airport, on Feb 7, 2017?
2. On 19 February, we'll have 12 hrs layover and we want to go on tour. Wich type do we need to?

OR, which type do we need to stay 4 hrs at the airport on Feb 7, AND to go on a 8 hrs tour on 19 February?

Thank you very much,
Irene Salazar Carvajal and Fabio Jimenez Castro
Sydney, Australia

Irene, if I don’t mistake when you said, you mean your travel route will be like this Sydney – China (4 hours)-Japan-China (12 hours) – Australia, right? If yes, you are eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in China in both directions. No visa will be needed then.
When you return, if you want to go to the city for a tour, you just need to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the immigration office inside the airport. Nice journey.
