Do I need to provide the Taiwan passport when applying Chinese visa even I plan to use US Passport

Born in Taiwan and now is US Citizen. Plan a vacation to China arranged by a travel agency in Canada which does not apply for the customers in US. Plan to use US Passport for travel. Why was told by a travel agency in US to also provide my expired Taiwan passport?
Hope to hear back soon.

Yes, you should also provide your previous Taiwan passport. It's just the rule.
