What do I need to do to qualify for 144 hr rule

I am going from the USA to Tokyo to Hong Kong to Shanghai to the USA. I know I can use the 144 hour rule but what do I need to do before I get to Shanghai and when I get there. Thank you.

Sharon, you need to inform the airlines that you want to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai before you board the plane in HK, and then you can apply for it in Shanghai airport after you arrive.
