About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Shanghai visa exemption policy

I am a Canadian passport holder and is planning to travel from Toronto to Hong Kong and then take a cruise from Hong Kong to Shanghai.
The cruise will end in Shanghai, where we plan to stay in a Shanghai for 2 days and then travel by air back to Hong Kong and then back to Canada.
My question is whether we are qualify for the above exemption policy.
Thanks for your help

I’m afraid you won’t qualify for the free transit in Shanghai because you will go back to HK after staying in Shanghai, but in principle, you should go to a third country or region rather than the last one you come from.

Although the cruise starts from HK, the cruise ship actually stops at south Korea before going to shanghai. So as far as immigration policy is concerned, they consider my trip is south korea-shanghai-HK, thus will qualify for the 144 hr visa exemption. I have confirmed this by calling shanghai immigration inspection station

Umm, the instruction is very clear in that regard. You'll only need your onward ticket. There's nothing much to explain here.
