Transit vs Tourist visa?

My husband and I (Aussie citizens) are planning a 3 night stop-over in Shanghai en route to Europe in August 2017. Which is more suitable, tourist OR transit visas? Our plans are based on flights in and out of PVG.

Actually, you are eligible for the 72 hour free transit in Shanghai if you travel like that, and then no transit G type or tourist L type will be required.
