About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Kazakhstan to Indonesia with 2 transits mix international and domectic flight via China

Hi,
We are planning to fly from Kazakhstan (either Astana or Almaty) to Jakarta with China Southern Airlines under one booking number. The itinerary includes two transits: first in Urumqi for 4 hours, then a domestic flight to Shenzhen for 3 hours before departing for Jakarta.

Another option is via Beijing for 3 hours, followed by a domestic flight to Shenzhen with a 6-hour layover before the final departure to Jakarta.

Am I eligible for the 24-hour visa-free transit policy, considering that I will be transferring from the international to the domestic terminal? Or do I not need a visa at all since the flights are all under one booking code?

Troy, you do not need a visa because both of your itineraries are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit. When traveling on 24 hour visa free transit it does not matter how many stops you have, but it is essential to carefully count your entire amount of transit hours. Transit hours are counted starting from your first landing in China until your last (final) departure. In other words, the flight between the two Chinese airports is also counted. In your case it it more than obvious that your entire transit time is far shorter than 24 hours.

You have to count that you will perform all your formalities at the very first point of landing because your following flight will be a purely domestic one. This is not a problem because you will receive a temporary entry permit at the first point of your landing.

Just one additional detail... If you decide to travel via Urumqi, you can really use just 24 hour visa free transit, but if you travel via Beijing and Shanghai, you can extend your stay within China for up to 240 hours (10 days) because Indonesian citizens are eligible for 240 hour visa free transit scheme. Urumqi is outside the zone allowed for travel under 240 hour visa free transit, so there only 24 hour visa free transit is available.
