About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai

Hello,

We are travelling from Sydney, Australia to Shanghai via Hongkong. It is only transiting thru HK. We will stop over in HK on our return from Shanghai. Please note Cathay Pacific does not fly non-stop from Sydney to Shanghai, it is via Hongkong. We would like to stay in Shanghai for 5-6 days and then fly onward to Hongkong we will be staying in Hongkong for 5 days and then return to Sydney directly from Hongkong. Can we use the 144 hour free transit please?

Thank you

I think many travelers (including me) fall into the same situation. I hope the Shanghai government official website can clarify the following: Sydney to Shanghai via Hong Kong, without leaving the airport is treated as Sydney to Shanghai or as Hong Kong to Shanghai.

The instructions are crystal clear: you must arrive from a different country/territory than your first destination outside China. If you are flying on CX from Sydney to Hong Kong first, then to Shanghai, then to Hong Kong, I guess it's clear to anyone that you are not transiting to a third country since the Chinese immigration sees this as HK-Shanghai-HK. Doesn't matter if you clear immigration in HK or not.
