About:Chinese Embassy in Australia
on a cruise from sydney ,we are in shanghai for 1 day before sailing to hong kong and flying back
Do I need a visa? and if so ,what is the cheapest option.

In principle, you are eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai, but you’d better double check that with the cruise ship company.
