The first thing you have to do is to determine your eligibility for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. To be certain whether you are eligible or not, here is a couple of conditions that your itinerary has to fulfill:
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China port.
- Your flight from Shanghai to some other country is not allowed to have any additional stop within mainland China and in the country where your cruise will have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai. In other words, if your last port of call, immediately before Shanghai is in South Korea, you are not allowed to fly Shanghai to South Korea.
If the above mentioned conditions are fulfilled, you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area and you don't need any kind of visa.
You will print out your flight ticket from Shanghai to some other country and have that printout with you. Also, you will print out a confirmation of your accommodation booking in Shanghai.
Upon arrival in Shanghai, you will fill out the blue form (beside the yellow one) aboard the ship or at the cruise terminal and after that, you will get a sticker in your passport and be allowed to exit the terminal and to spend your time as you wish.
