cruise ship to airport

I will be arriving by cruise ship and departing by air next day. Will I need a visa?

Eric, if you will fly to a third country or region rather than the last one you come from and your layover time is within 24 hours, you can enjoy 24 hour direct transit and then no entry permit will be needed. But in Shanghai, your layover time can be more than 24 hours.
