Does layover country count as 3rd region

I had a been denied boarding a flight to Guangzhou from BKK due to the fact that my 3rd country had a layover back in Bangkok befor it reached its final destination KUL.

Im a Canadian passport holder and intended to stay for 72hrs transit
Who is in the wrong in this situation?

Branden, according to what you said, your travel route will be like BKK-Guangzhou-BKK-KUL, right? If yes, this route is not eligible for the free transit policy. I’m sorry! You should fly like BKK-Guangzhou- KUL directly.
