About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I have a 8 hour layover

Dear Sir / Madame,
I am a US citizen visiting Phnom Penh next May. On the way back to US I have an 8-hour layover in Shanghai. Do I need a visa to visit the city for a few hours before returning to the airport to catch my flight back to US?
Thank you.

Michael, no, you don’t need it because you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit there. If you want to leave the airport, you just need to apply for a temporary stay permit which is free of charge at the airport.
