Robert, when you board the flight in Sydney, you need to inform the carrier that you want to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. After you arrive in shanghai, you can follow the direction signs to the transit counter to apply for the 144 hour free transit by providing your passport, and the onward ticket.
