Flying London to Sydney with stopover in Shanghai

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Australia and want to break up the journey and visit a friend in Shanghai on the way. Am I correct in thinking that I can fly to Shanghai arriving on a Sunday and leave on the Tuesday without requiring a visa? Many Thanks
