About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am a US citizen traveling from Chiang Mai back to USA, but wanted to do a 3 day trip to chengdu.

Would I need a Visa?

Nope, if you fly from Chiang Mai to Chengdu and then fly to the USA, you can avail yourself of the 72h free transit.
