About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a tourist visa or can I use the 72 free transit

I am having issues with Southern China Airlines regarding my flights. They cancelled my flights from Rome to Beijing. On reissuing me a flight with another airline they said I needed an entry permit. Is this the case?
My flights are as follows.
Rome to Beijing with a different airline (at the end I need to get my luggage ect)
Then southern China
2016-12-09 PEK(BeiJing)--CAN(GuangZhou) 0830 1145

2016-12-09 CAN(GuangZhou)--MEL(MELBOURNE) 1755 0640+1

2016-12-30 MEL(MELBOURNE)--CAN(GuangZhou) 1130 1810

2016-12-30 CAN(GuangZhou)--FCO(Rome) 2130 0600+1
Can you please help? It seems ridiculous that I have to get a visa!! I have both Australian and British citizenship

Hello, I've been to China several times, mostly by transit. Since you are changing from an international flight to a domestic flight (PEK to CAN), then you will need a visa; you will have to tell the airline IN ROME when you check in to fly to China that you will need a visa to transit in-country, but also tell them that you will NOT be staying overnight in country, just in transit. Then once you land in Beijing, you'll see a visa application desk just before you get to Customs/Immigration (I think it's on the left if memory serves), and apply there. It's an automatic really, just a short hassle, you will need your passport (obviously) AND both your domestic and following international ticket from CAN to MEL, to show them that you are immediately leaving. The UK normally counts as visa-free, but since you're changing from Beijing to Guangzhou, you need the visa. You can also apply for the visa at the Chinese embassy in London before you go

@ Bernie

What you are saying is totally wrong.
He´s on an international transit and as long as it´s under 24h he can have as many stops within China as he wants.
And there´s NO visa on arrival in Beijing for a tourist.
So you can´t apply for a visa at Beijing airport.
But there´s no need for a visa if the transit is under 24h.
