About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I have two stopovers in China. Can I still leave the airport for one of them?

I'm flying from Honolulu to Phuket. My first layover is in Shanghai Pu Dong for 5 hours. I fly out of Shanghai Hongqiao (a different airport). My second layover is in Kunming for 23hrs & 25minutes before I leave for Phuket. I would like to leave the airport in Kunming. Am I still able to apply for the 72 hour Visa Free Transit even though my short stay in China will put me in two cities in China due to my first layover? Or are you only able to apply for this if you only have one layover in one city in China?

Carmelina, if so, I’m afraid you won’t be eligible for the 72 hour free transit because you will stop in two Chinese cities. You need to apply for a transit G type or tourist L type entry permit in advance.

I called the Chinese Embassy today about this exact thing and they told me to contact the airline. The airline can give you all the details because that is who you have to tell that you want the 72 hour free transit visa. You let them know before you depart.
