About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

We are US citizens flying from Vancouver, BC Canada 1/24/2017 to Shanghai (PVG).

We arrive 1/25/2017 at 4:40P and plan on staying in a Shanghai hotel overnight leaving the next day 1/26/2017 for the cruise ship sailing away from Shanghai. We end the cruise 2/11/2017 in Hong Kong. If I'm reading the "144 Chinese hour rule" correctly we ARE NOT required to have a Chinese VISA....correct?

you can't show an onward ticket if you are getting on a boat. Doubt you qualify based on these rules.
