About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

US > Beijing > Shanghai > Seoul (US Passport holder)

Hi there,

My upcoming trip starts in the US and then has a 2 hr layover in Beijing before arriving in Shanghai on a Friday morning. Then, I have a trip from Shanghai to Seoul on Sunday afternoon (less than 72 hours). Does it matter whether I have a 2 hour layover in Beijing before I reach Shanghai? (Referencing the following rule: "The flights can only stop in one Chinese city, meaning passengers have to enter and exit from the same city, except in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu, where the 144-hour visa-free transit has been implemented. For instance, if a flight lands in Xian via Beijing, passengers are not able to enjoy the policy." ). I only plan to leave the airport once arriving in Shanghai (not Beijing).

Susan, yes, it does matter. You won’t be able to use the free transit if you have stopover in both Beijing and Shanghai. You need to apply for a tourist L type or transit G type entry permit if you travel like that.
