options to be qualified for "L" visa category (Tourist)

I am travelling with my friend without the aid of travel agency and we have already our confirmed flight and hotel booking and itinerary as per one of the option to qualify for an "L" category; but then our application was not accepted as they required an invitation letter; how can we get the invitation letter since we do not have anyone from China? and why invitation letter is required when one of the option is already fulfilled?

Melanie, sorry for what you have experienced, but it's normal. This invitation letter should be got from the tourist bureau of China via a travel agency. It sounds inhumane but that's the case.
