and hopefully see the sunset there. Is it possible to do so? What's the last departure time of the north cable car down? We stay in Xian, so we also need to catch the train/bus back. Many thanks for your reply.

Your plan is feasible. The hiking duration from West Peak to North Peak is around an hour. The last cable car leaves the North Peak at 19:00, which will enble you to catch the train back to the downtown.
