About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I have a 14 hr layover in Shanghai, do I need to get a 72 hour visa?

I am not planning on leaving the airport. Just waiting for my connecting flight to Japan

No, if you don't plan to leave the airport, you don't need to apply for the 72h free transit.
