About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am flying from Sydney to Guangzhou; then Guangzhou to Urumqi;

then Urumqi to Almaty. My stop over in Urumqi is 8 hours.

I travelled this route during August 2015. Now upon further research I have heard I cannot stay in Urumqi for more than 2 hours.

Do I need a visa?
P.S. I have an Australian passport.

Yes if your transit in Urumqi is longer as 2 h, you have to apply for a transit G type in advance.
