John, after stopping in Shanghai, if you will take plane to a third country or region different from the last one you come from, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai and then no need to apply for an entry permit.

Actually, the 144 hour free transit policy has been carried out in Shanghai, but you may be given the 24 hour direct transit because you just stay for one night there.
